Aberdeen school children toured the home of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team after winning a prestigious competition to design and build and electric race car for the second year running.
The Albyn School’s Green Arrows Racing Team retained their Formula 24 championship title with their Kit Build class car, outperforming 52 other entrants. The Greenpower Education Trust’s Formula 24 Finals took place on October 13th at Goodwood Motor Circuit. The race aims to inspire young people around the world to excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
F24 is a distance endurance formula – a competition of who can travel the furthest for a fixed amount of battery charge.
Aramco Europe Senior Research Science Consultant Jamie Cochran has been supporting the group in his capacity as STEM ambassador, volunteering 100 hours of his time to mentor the team.
This support has included engineering education sessions, race event preparation, and on-the-day race support, helping the students hone both their technical and teamwork skills.
He said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to support these fantastic kids as they designed and built their race-winning endurance vehicle. I congratulate them on their success, which reflects the vital importance of science, engineering, technology and mathematics across so many disciplines that are driven by innovation.”
Key to the team’s continued success has been the active support of Aramco Europe through the STEM Ambassador Programme.
The Formula 24 challenge enables students aged 11 to 16 to design, build, and race electric endurance vehicles, with each race lasting 90 minutes. Success in these events requires not only technical expertise but also strategic acumen, as teams must manage pit stops and driver rotations to maximize race performance.
Following their race-day triumph, the team was rewarded with an exclusive educational tour of the Aramco Aston Martin Formula 1 Factory.
The students were introduced to cutting-edge race car component manufacturing processes in a state-of-the-art facility and visited the Silverstone Museum, which also houses the Aramco Future Tech exhibit.
Aramco Europe supports several STEM initiatives through its global citizenship programme, which underscores the company’s contribution fostering future talent in engineering and technology.
