Aramco Europe robot demonstration makes a splash in Switzerland

News|Switzerland|

Aramco Europe’s technical services team has completed a demonstration of an underwater drone on a lake in Switzerland.

The versatile aquatic unit is designed to inspect complex underwater infrastructure with advanced automated data collection features and can operate in the worst visibility while also handling rough seas. After a successful demonstration on a Swiss lake, the next step is to test the Tethys Robotics-supplied unit in a real facility in Saudi Arabia.

The robotic theme continued this week as Aramco Europe head of engineering and project management, Mohamed Elreheem, delivered a presentation on the robotics revolution to the Automa conference in Amsterdam.

He said: “Robotics and other automated systems are deployed across Aramco’s operational ecosystem. From inspection and maintenance of our onshore and offshore sites, storage tanks, and power system infrastructure, our drones are also supporting a wide range of our field operations, such as emergency response, security surveillance, aerial mapping, and environmental monitoring.

“This exciting technology plays a key role in our broader digital transformation and enables our teams in the field to operate in challenging environments, ensuring safety and efficiency while reducing operating costs.”

Aramco has been recognized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for its use of robotics and other 4IR technologies at its facilities.

Abqaiq, one of the world’s largest oil processing facilities, is among the Aramco facilities admitted to the WEF’s Global Lighthouse Network for its use of robots and smart drones among other cutting-edge technologies.
