Aramco Europe’s Research & Development team head to Vienna this week where European automotive leaders are gathering to share the latest industry technological innovations.

Emerging drivetrains will be centre stage at the 46th International Vienna Motor Symposium, as carmakers seek to lower emissions through more sustainable designs. The two-day annual symposium attracts more than 1,000 leaders from the global automotive industry.

Aramco Europe will exhibit research into hydrogen to internal combustion engine (ICE) with a light commercial vehicle.

The team will also showcase Aramco’s Turbulent Jet Ignition technology, an advanced combustion strategy aimed at improving engine efficiency in legacy systems as well as Aramco's efforts to improve air quality in urban areas with a passenger democar equipped with an advanced exhaust aftertreatment.

Advanced fuel technology will also be displayed illustrating the Aramco interest in low-carbon synthetic fuels which combine green hydrogen with CO2.

Aramco Fuel Research Center Manager, Pierre-Olivier Calendini, said: “The Vienna Motor Symposium convenes leaders from across the global automotive industry and represents an important platform to share technologies into engine and fuel that may support challenges of the mobility transition.”

Aramco Europe’s stand will display its new partnership with HORSE Powertrain, a global leader in hybrid and internal combustion powertrain solutions. HORSE Powertrain CEO Matias Giannini will address the opening plenary session on whether there is more than one solution in the drive toward net zero.

Evolving powertrains

Aramco completed the purchase of a 10% equity stake in HORSE Powertrain in December. This investment bolsters efforts to develop transitional ICE and hybrid powertrains for use in regions and sectors where electrification faces short-term barriers, along with complementary technologies such as alternative fuel and hydrogen solutions.

Ingo Scholten, Chief Technology Officer at HORSE Powertrain, emphasized the importance of multiple drive train and fuel technologies at a press conference ahead of the event.

He said: ‘The powertrain is no longer just a vehicle component – it has evolved into a complete technology sector that drives the future of mobility. We're moving beyond the traditional supplier role to become architects of an entirely new industry and empowering car brands to confidently navigate the transformation of mobility through our deep technical expertise and visionary approach.’
