From lecture hall to pit lane: Aramco students join Aston Martin at Silverstone

A group of talented Aramco students have completed an internship at Silverstone where they gained a unique insight into the workings of a successful Formula 1 team.
The Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team welcomed their second intake of Aramco interns for their five-week placement at the home of British motorsport.
Eight mechanical engineering students from the University of Manchester had the opportunity to learn about the multiple technical disciplines that collaborate on and off the track, in a sport where teamwork is critical to success.
Mohammed Al Mutawa participated in the program for a second time after impressing the team last year, allowing him to pursue the second phase of his internship project.
He said “My internship at Aston Martin Aramco Formula One has been an extraordinary experience that will have a lasting impact on me.
“The experience was challenging in the best way. The pace in Formula 1 is unlike anywhere else, and I had to adapt quickly while working on multiple projects in short timeframes.”
As global sponsor of Formula 1 and a strategic partner of the Aston Martin Racing team, Aramco is pushing the boundaries of technological innovation and the students gained invaluable insights into the journey of new fuel, engine and material technologies from the testing laboratory to the track.
The company’s research and development efforts across fuel and lubricant technology and non-metallic material performance aims to improve engine performance and reduce emissions.
Talal Al Otaibi, a third-year student, was also part of this year’s internship program and was impressed with the teamwork and collaboration he witnessed while at Silverstone.
“We looked at making more sustainable molds used for making various carbon fiber components, so I got to talk to a lot of people working in different disciplines. I was impressed with how you could approach anyone for advice.”
